Business - 3 min read

From the Monday-morning complaining, it's pretty clear that negative workplaces are everywhere. Not only are negative workplaces unpleasant places to be, but they suffer from a lack of productivity and teamwork that can have long-term consequences.

The good news is that if you can cultivate a positive atmosphere in your workplace, you will attract the best employees and provide them with conditions that will spur great results both for your company and for your workers' individual careers.

As you read through the following attributes of positive workplaces, consider what you can do to improve your workplace's environment.

1. Values

A core set of values sets the stage for good feelings, quality performance, and synergistic energy. Does your core values and company’s “why” outline goals and demonstrate the behaviors that exemplify your company's commitment to excellence? Does it explain how you will interact with each other, the company, customers, and shareholders?

At Altus, we have an Employee Value Proposition (EVP) that we use to create a positive working environment for our staff. We promise to provide a workplace that is Progressive, Open, Supportive, Rewarding and Vibrant.

2. Atmosphere

The most beneficial workplace atmosphere is one that is both relaxed and productive. How can a workplace be both relaxing and productive at the same time? Show appreciation for the work your employees do, and encourage innovation and teamwork. Reward the achievement of goals, and stay positive.

3. Excellence

When workers are expected to take responsibility for their work and their decisions and they're recognized for the good things they do, people strive for excellence. Don't tell people that sub-par work is "good enough." Instead, offer coaching and mentoring to help them to reach levels of excellence.

4. Open and Honest Communication

Similarly to personal relationships, business relationships thrive when each person can freely express opinions and feel that they're respected by those around them. Not all opinions and communication will be positive, and that's okay. It's better to acknowledge problems and address them than to let problems fester until a feeling of negativity overtakes the workplace.

5. Humour

Incorporating humour into your workplace will keep things light. Without humour, it's easy to lose perspective and feel that everything is overly serious. Have fun from time to time, and allow people to laugh at their mistakes. We all make them.

6. Compassion and Respect

Tragedy strikes everyone, so strive to make your workplace is an environment where your employees feel supported and understood. When tragedies like natural disasters, accidents, illnesses, and personal problems strike, create ways for your employees to support each other. Donations, cards, and help with deadlines can go a long way toward creating a positive workplace.

With well-defined values, open and honest communication, humor, and an emphasis on compassion and respect, you can create the kind of workplace that people want to spend time in. It will help with your recruitment and retention efforts. Plus, you might like spending more time there yourself!
